TL;DR: Unlocking a password-protected PDF is a rights-and-password problem, not a translation problem. Use the password you already have in Adobe Acrobat or the original authoring app. After the file opens, Doctranslate.io can translate the PDF and return an editable file with the layout preserved. It does not unlock, decrypt, or bypass open or permission passwords.
What is the difference between an open password and a permission password?
PDF software uses two common locks. They look similar in a file dialog and they are not the same job.
User password (open password). The file will not open until someone enters this password. Preview, search, and upload all fail until it is entered.
Owner password (permission password). The file may open for reading, but printing, copying, or editing is restricted. Teams often call this “locked for editing.”
Both locks are there because an author chose them. The legitimate way to remove either one is the password, or another method the author already controls — such as opening the source file and exporting a new PDF. There is no honest shortcut if you do not have that right.
Doctranslate.io does not distinguish these locks for you. It does not remove them.
How do you unlock a PDF you are allowed to use?
If you are the owner, or the owner has given you the password, stay inside a tool you already trust.
1. Open the file in Adobe Acrobat (or Acrobat Reader, if you only need to enter an open password). When the dialog appears, enter the password the owner sent on a separate channel — not in the same email as the file.
2. If you have the owner password and a license for Acrobat Pro, use the security settings the product already documents. Acrobat can change or remove security when you know the password. That is the supported path. Follow Adobe’s current help for “password-protect a PDF” / remove security. The exact menu name changes by version; the rule does not: the password is required.
3. Prefer the original authoring app when you still have it. A contract that still exists as .docx, or a report that still exists as .pptx, should be unlocked there and re-exported. You avoid fighting a permission flag on a flattened PDF.
4. Save a clearly named, unrestricted copy in your controlled store. Example: Q3-pack-unlocked-2026-08-27.pdf. Keep the locked original. Do not overwrite it.
That is the whole unlock. No browser extension. No “PDF unlocker” upload. No second vendor in the middle of a confidential file.
If you do not have the password, stop. Ask the owner. Guessing, cracking, or using a service that promises to strip protection from a file you do not control is not a workflow step.
Why is unauthorized bypass a bad idea?
Unauthorized bypass is a legal problem first and a file-quality problem second.
- Rights. Removing a password you were not given can violate the owner’s rights and, depending on the file and the jurisdiction, computer-misuse or copyright rules. “We need it for the meeting” does not create a license.
- Confidentiality. Consumer unlock sites receive the whole PDF. That is a poor place for a contract, a payroll file, or an audit packet.
- Integrity. Tools that strip security often flatten fonts, tables, and bookmarks. You then “unlock” a file you can no longer trust as the same document.
If a colleague forwards a locked PDF and says “just unlock it,” ask for the password or the source file — not a link to a cracker.
What happens after the PDF is accessible?
Once the file opens without a password prompt, it is an ordinary PDF. Translation can start.
Official PDF and document translation steps are: set source and target language, set tone and subject, choose options, upload, confirm the credit estimate, then download. Supported document types include .pdf (also .docx, .pptx, .xlsx, .txt), up to three files, 300 MB each.
Useful options after the PDF is already open:
- Keep original font size so the page does not reflow more than it has to.
- Translate images with files when captions or stamps sit inside images.
- AI instruction and My Dictionary for locked terms.
- Bilingual translation when reviewers need source and target together.
The download retains original formatting and is editable. That is the documented product job: translate an accessible document and return a file someone can still work in. For why that matters on tables and page breaks, see preserving layouts after translation . If the next step is getting a table into a working sheet, use a dedicated copy a table from PDF to Excel workflow — after the PDF opens.
Doctranslate.io has not been verified to handle open passwords or permission passwords on the way in. Do not upload a still-locked PDF and expect the platform to open it.

How is File Protection different from a PDF password?
They sit on opposite ends of the job.
A PDF open or permission password protects the incoming file. File Protection on Doctranslate.io protects the outgoing download.
When File Protection is enabled, translated files are compressed into a ZIP that requires a password you set (4–20 characters). The system does not store that password for recovery. That setting does not unlock an incoming password-protected PDF.
If you share a translated pack, send the ZIP password through a separate channel. Change the default. Treat File Protection as output hygiene, not as a PDF unlocker.
Layout preservation and editable downloads are the documented USPs to rely on after access. Password removal is not on that list.
Frequently asked questions
Does Doctranslate.io unlock open passwords or permission passwords?
No. It does not unlock, decrypt, or remove either type of PDF password. Open the file with the owner’s password in Acrobat or the authoring app first.
Is it legal to remove a PDF password?
Only if you have the right to that file and the password (or the owner’s authorization). If you do not, do not use a bypass tool.
Can I edit the file after it has been translated?
Yes. Official document translation returns a download that keeps the original formatting and is ready for further editing. That is after the source PDF is already accessible — not a way to edit a still-locked file.
What does the File Protection password actually cover?
The output ZIP of translated files. Set your own password before you share the pack. It is not a key for incoming PDFs.
The bottom line
In 2026, “unlock a password-protected PDF” still means: prove you may open it, use the password in Acrobat or the authoring app, and save an accessible copy. After that, translation is a separate step. Doctranslate.io Document Translation takes an accessible PDF and returns an editable, layout-preserved file. It is not a decryption product.
Start with Doctranslate.io Document Translation when the PDF is already accessible and you need an editable, layout-preserved translation.
